3.2 Growth responses to the repeated first condition
The seeds for the first condition were sown on the Friday, and as such no-one could get in to the labs to measure their growth (if any) over the weekend. As a result it was thought wise to repeat the first condition especially as it was the control. The N933 ecotype started germinating on the second day (1 day earlier than the other 2). The other two strains germinated on the 3 rd day as in the previous experiment. The N933 strain grew relatively quickly, reaching 15 germinated seeds by the third day where both the N20 and the N1601 germinated 7 and 9 seedlings respectively. The N1601 strain appeared to grow better than the N20 strain in this condition as opposed to the previous, where the number of germinated N1601 seedlings was the lowest. N933 also developed into the B characteristic quicker than both the other ecotypes, by 1 day in comparison to the N1601 and by 2 days in comparison to the N20. Indeed all of the germinated seedlings (18) in N933 developed in 2 cotyledons and true leaves on the 12 th day of the experiment.
There were no significantly different growth rates within the strains, with p values being returned as high as 0.8 for the N1601 strain compared to the N933.
