3.10 Growth response to the 8 th condition

This condition was carried out because it was noticed that when the pots were removed from the -20ºC freezer after 4 hours (condition 6) the temperature of the top soil only reached -8ºC. It was prudent therefore, to attempt a more revised condition for stratification. It was found however that the temperature of the soil only reached -15ºC in this condition . It took 4 days for the seeds to start germinating after they had been removed from the freezer where they were conditioned at -20 ºC for 8 hours (overnight). Again the N933 strain started germinating the most rapidly with 12 seeds germinating by the 3 rd day. Again the N20 started germinating quicker (initially) when compared to the N1601 ecotype, however by the 4 th day the N1601 strain had germinated more seed than the N20 ecotype. True leaves started developing by the 8 th day in the N933 strain, and by the end of the experiment all of the 15 germinated seeds of N933 had developed into true leaves.

It appears as though none of the ecotypes statistically benefited from the freezer treatment at -20 ºC. Again the N1601 strain has a relatively low p value of 0.16 when compared to the N20-A p value of 0.72 and the N933-A p value of 0.57. However yet again it failed to prove a significant improvement in the rate of germination. However the rate of development into true leaves was reduced in the N20 strain giving a value of 0.17. Again however this is not statistically significant.
